The story

Tamsui (Hobe) opened as a treaty port in 1860 and became northern Taiwan's main international port, drawing foreign trading houses, consulates and missionary George Mackay. Zhongzheng Road was its commercial spine, lined with Qing-era temples such as Fuyou Temple. After the harbour silted up, trade faded, and it reinvented itself around snacks and riverside sunsets. Agei, tofu stuffed with glass noodles, was reportedly invented here in the 1960s, its name from Japanese aburaage.
