The story

Tongxing Old Street, formerly Wanqiuzaigou, is said to be Houlong's earliest market street; together with Gongsiliao harbour it formed a trading port lined with merchant houses and pleasure venues, and in the Japanese era Gongsiliao was one of the special ports allowed to trade with China. With the harbour's decline the street emptied, and only a few red-brick houses remain.
