Wulai is Atayal country; its name comes from the Atayal word for steaming hot water. The old street runs along the Nanshi River with stalls selling bamboo-tube rice, wild-boar sausages and millet wine, plus the Wulai Atayal Museum. Across the bridge, a Japanese-era logging push-car line now carries visitors to Wulai Falls.
