The story
One theory says Xindian ('new shops') got its name when riverside shops at Bitan were washed away and rebuilt in the 1830s–40s. The Guangming Street area once had several cinemas, and snack stalls that served moviegoers still trade, such as a famous pan-fried bun stall. The 1937 Bitan Suspension Bridge, listed as a monument in 2013, is the town's emblem; most old buildings have been rebuilt.
