Under the Qing Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors, Xinzhuang was a key port on the Tamsui River, reached by ships from the mainland and Japan, which left Xinzhuang Road lined with Qing temples like Ciyou, Guangfu, Wusheng and Dizang. Old lane names such as Salt House and Rice Market Lane echo its heyday. The Dizang Temple festival is a major local event, and the Xiaoxiyuan glove-puppet troupe originated here.
