Yancheng was reclaimed from salt pans in the Japanese era; after Shioe-chō was created in 1915 this became the city's busiest shopping street, the 'Ginza of Kaohsiung'. During the Vietnam War US navy ships docked in Kaohsiung and Qixian 3rd Road filled with bars, earning the nickname 'Bar Street'. Road widening in 1992 removed most old buildings; today only scattered signs and memories remain.
