The story
Yangmei's old street centres on Dahua Street, which thrived as a waypoint on the original Taipei–Hsinchu railway with cloth shops, rice dealers and freight agents. In 1929 the line was moved north to ease a steep gradient, a 'new street' grew around the new station, and the old quarter slowly declined. Today it is mostly homes and a traditional market, with Japanese-era piers still under the Hongmei Bridge.
